Both Newton basketball teams grabbed a win last week in their only game of the week.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers grabbed their first win with a 66-35 win over East Marion. Newton led 14-9 at the end of the first and 30-20 at the half. The Lady Tigers pulled away in the second half, outscoring East Marion 16-9 in the third and 20-6 in the fourth. Zia Shields led Newton with 20 points while Kania Arrington had 15 points. JaLeah Hickman added 11 points.
In the boys’ game, the Tigers pulled away late to take a 17-point win. Newton led 9-7 at the end of the first and 23-18 at the half. Newton outscored East Marion 15-13 in the third and 21-11 in the fourth for the final margin. Kedrick Osby led Newton with 16 points while Jaden Parker had 14 points. Justin Thompson had 13 points while Ray Nettles had 11 points.
Newton is scheduled to travel to Noxubee County on Tuesday and McLauren on Thursday.
