Newton County broke a five-game losing streak this week and hopes to get back to its winning ways this week.
Newton County opened the week with a 5-2 win over Simpson Academy on Thursday and then dropped a 9-8 decision to Enterprise.
On Saturday, the Cougars split a doubleheader with Southeast Lauderdale, losing 12-5 before taking a 6-1 win in the nightcap.
Newton County, now 4-9, will return to Division 5-4A play this week with a key series against Northeast Jones, playing at home on Tuesday and on the road on Friday. Newton County will hit the road on Saturday and play at the East Webster Tournament.
County 5, Simpson Academy 2
Newton County scored five runs in the seventh inning to take a three-run win over the Cougars on Thursday.
Simpson scored two runs in the fourth inning and held that lead until the seventh.
County had six hits in the contest as Kamon Shelwood was 2-for-2 and Tucker Fitch was 2-for-3 with one run scored. David Burton and Cole Shimfessel had County’s other hits while Rod Evans and Gavin Bailey each scored runs.
Hayden West got the start and pitched the first six innings, giving up two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out nine. Hayze West pitched the final inning and struck out one to pick up the win.
Enterprise 9, County 8
Enterprise scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a one-run win over Newton County on Thursday in a six-inning contest.
Enterprise went up 5-1 after the first inning and led 7-2 after four innings. But County scored one in the fifth and five in the top of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. Enterprise then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win.
Newton County had nine hits and six walks but struck out 11 times and left 11 on base.
David Burton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Kamon Shelwood was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Cole Shimfessel only had one hit but drove in three runs while Rod Evans, Gavin Bailey and Hayden West each scored two runs apiece. Garrett Mills also and Tucker Fitch had County’s other hits.
Gavin Bailey got the start gave up four runs on one hits and two walks. Harber Reese pitched the final five innings and gave up five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven.
SE Lauderdale 12, County 5
Southeast scored eight runs in the fifth inning and took a seven-run win over the Cougars in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The game was tied at 4-4 after three innings before County scored in the top of the fifth to go up 5-4. The Tigers then exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the game.
County had 11 hits in the contest, led by Cole Shimfessel who was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Hayden West was 2-for-3 while Tucker Fitch was also 2-for-4. Rod Evans, Gavin Bailey and Kamon Shelwood each had singles and scored runs.
Hayden West got the start and pitched four innings, giving up four his on three runs and two walks. Jesse Phillips pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up six runs on two hits and two walks while Riley Cain pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out two.
County 6, SE Lauderdale 1
The Cougars got a complete-game pitching performance out of Gavin Bailey as they took a five-run win over Southeast in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday.
Newton County scored one in the first and Southeast tied it with one in the fourth. County then scored two in the fifth and sixth and added another in the seventh to take the win.
Newton County had 13 hits in the contest as Hayden West was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Gavin Bailey was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Garrett Mills was 2-for-3 and scored a run while Rod Evans also scored two runs.
Bailey pitched all seven innings and gave up only four hits and one unearned run while walking four and striking out six.
