Newton County returned from Christmas break and lost two games in the Newton Invitational last week.
The Cougars dropped a pair of tight games as they post 60-55 to Bogue Chitto and 55-36 to host Newton.
The Lady Cougars lost 43-28 to Bogue Chitto and 66-25 to Newton.
Newton County opened Division 5-4A play at Mendenhall on Tuesday and will host rival West Lauderdale on Friday.

The Tigers eventually pulled away from the Cougars in a hard-fought contest on Saturday night at the Newton Invitational.
Newton led 11-10 at the end of the first period and held a 23-19 lead at the half. Newton started to pull away in the second half as they outscored Newton County 15-9 in the third to lead 38-28 at the end of the third. Newton put the game away in the fourth, outscoring Newton County 17-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Jay Roberts had a big game off the bench for Newton with 18 points while Dazmeon Page had 14 points. Jamarian Pace and Yorel Phillips each had seven points apiece.
Josiah Cleveland led Newton County with 15 points while Chris Thames had 11 points.

The Lady Tigers had little trouble with the Lady Cougars on Saturday at the Newton Invitational.
Newton led 17-10 at the end of the first and then outscored County 15-7 in the second to lead 32-17 at the half. The Lady Tigers then outscored the Lady Cougars 18-6 in the third and 16-2 in the fourth.
Myja McNichols led Newton with 17 points while JaLeah Hickmon and Zia Shields each had 12 points apiece. Nia McCaphia also chipped in 12 points for Newton.
Keasja Wansley led Newton County with eight points.
Bogue Chitto boys 60,

The Cougars made a late charge but came up short as they fell to Bogue Chitto on Friday at the Newton Tournament.
Bogue Chitto jumped out to an 18-7 lead in the first period and led 30-18 at the half. County started to come back in the second half as they outscored Bogue Chitto 14-12 in the third and 23-18 in the fourth for the final margin of five points. Josiah Cleveland led Newton County with 20 points while Alarys Johnson had 11 points. Chris Thomas and Jamaal Croft each had seven points apiece.

The Lady Bobcats built a big lead and took a 15-point win over the Lady Cougars on Friday.
Bogue Chitto led 10-4 at the end of the first and 25-16 at the half. The Lady Bobcats pulled away in the third, outscoring the Lady Cougars 11-5 to take a 36-21 lead as each team scored seven in the fourth.
Nahriah Brown led Newton County with nine points.
