The Newton County tennis team finished out their regular season last week.
County opened the week with a tough 5-2 loss to Stone County and then fell 5-2 to St. Aloysius on Saturday. They finished up the week with a 4-3 win over Jackson Prep on Saturday.
Newton County finished 11-8 on the regular season and will play in the Division 5-4A in individual Tournament on Tuesday at Jones Junior College. The team will host Vancleave on Thursday to open the first round of the 4A playoffs.
Stone County 5, County 2
The Cougars dropped a tight three-point loss to Stone County last week.
In singles, Newton County lost both matches as Tate Baucum lost 6-1, 6-4 on the boys side and Ava Espey lost 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 on the girls sides.
In boys doubles, Stone County took both matches as Daylon Nance and Lee Hill lost 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 at the No. 1 spot while Cole Tadlock and Keenan Selman lost 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Kamryn Rodriguez and Lauren Addy fought back from a first-set loss to win 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 girls doubles, Marilyn Tullos and Josie Tullos lost 6-4, 7-5. In mixed doubles, Parker Chaney and Emily Stewart won -4, 4-6, 10-7 for County’s other point.
St. Aloysius 5, County 2
St. Aloysius dominated on the girls side to take a three-point win over Newton County at the Northwest Rankin Tournament on Saturday.
In singles, St. Al took both points as Donald Blake lost 6-0, 6-0 on the boys side and Ave Espey lost 6-4, 6-4 on the girls side.
In girls doubles, Kamryn Rodriguez and Lauren Addy lost 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Alyssa McMullan and Aleah McMullan lost 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Parker Chaney and Emily Stewart lost 6-3, 6-4.
County took both points in boys doubles as Daylon Nance and Lee Hill won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot while Tate Baucum and Cole Tadlock won 7-5, 7-6 (3) at the No. 2 spot.
County 4, Jackson Prep 3
The Cougars took a big one-point win over MAIS power Jackson Prep to finish out the day on Saturday.
In singles, Donald Blake lost 6-1, 6-0 on the boys side while Lauren Addy won 6-1, 6-2 on the girls side.
Newton County took both boys doubles points as Daylon Nance and Lee Hill won 6-7 (1), 6-0, 10-4 at the No. 1 spot while Tate Baucum and Cole Tadlock won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Prep took both points as Kamryn Rodriguez and Ava Espey lost 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Katelyn Wall and Josie Tullos lost 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Parker Chaney and Emily Stewart won 6-1, 6-0 to secure the win for County.
