Both Newton County teams picked up a pair of victories this past week with sweeps of Morton and Clarkdale.
Both teams also lost to Union in the Sebastopol Tournament on Thursday.
Newton County will return to action as they host Leake County on Tuesday and will travel to Philadelphia on Friday. They will return to Philadelphia on Saturday for a one-day showcase tournament.
County girls 63, Morton 52
The Lady Cougars overcame a scoreless first period and took an 11-point win over Morton on Tuesday.
Morton jumped out to a 12-0 lead at the end of the first before County got going. The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Panthers 17-10 in the second and trailed 22-17 at the half. But the Lady Cougars exploded in the second half, outscoring the Lady Panthers 23-16 in the third and 23-14 in the fourth to take the win.
Nahriah Brown led County with 15 points while Leona Billy had 14 points. Remini Nickey had 10 points while Jayden Mack added nine points.
County boys 55, Morton 54
The Cougars overcame a poor third period and took an overtime win over the Panthers on Tuesday.
County led 10-6 at the end of the first and 28-22 at the half. Morton took the lead in the third by outscoring County 17-6 to take a 39-34 lead. County then outscored Morton 16-11 to send the game into overtime and took the win in the overtime period.
Jamall Croft led County with 18 points while Josiah Cleveland had 16 points and Lamar Morgan added six points.
County girls 48, Clarkdale 23
The Lady Cougars allowed only one point in the second half and took a 25-point win over the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday.
County jumped out to an 18-8 lead at the end of the first and led 28-22 at the half. The Lady Cougars pulled away in the second half as they outscored Clarkdale 17-1 in the third to take a 45-23 lead.
Remini Nickey led County with 14 points while Nahriah Brown had 12 points. Keasja Wansley also had seven points.
County boys 87, Clarkdale 41
The Cougars outscored the Bulldogs in every period as they took a 46-point win over Clarkdale in the Sebastopol Tournament on Saturday.
County jumped out to a 25-10 lead at the end of the first period and led 47-21 at the half. County continued to expand its lead as they outscored Clarkdale 18-13 in the third and 22-7 in the fourth.
Alayrs Johnson led County with 15 points while Chris Thomas and Josiah Cleveland each had 14 points apiece. Jamall Croft had 11 points and Jared Thames had 10 points.
