With starting pitcher Taylor Evans sidelined with a foot injury, it was a tough day for the Newton County Academy Lady Generals on Saturday.
The Lady Generals opened the season with three straight losses, falling to Simpson, Centreville and Canton at the Simpson County Academy Tournament at the Magee Sportsplex.
The Lady Generals were scheduled to take on Winston on Monday in their home opener and will host East Rankin on Tuesday.
On Saturday, the Lady Generals will travel to the Columbia Tournament.
Simpson 15, NCA 1
The Lady Generals got off to a rocky start in a run-rule loss to Class AAAA power Simpson on Saturday.
Simpson scored 10 runs in the first inning, followed by two in the second and third with one in the fourth. NCA scored its only run in the first inning.
The Lady Generals had four hits in the contest as Kaleigh Cosgrove had an RBI single. Abbie McGee had a double in the contest while Jordan Russell and Amber Garrison each had singles. Kelli Hollingsworth was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
Riley Usry got the start on the mound and gave up 10 hits and walked five while striking out two.
Centreville 8, NCA 4
In game two of the day, Centreville scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take a four-run win over the Lady Generals.
Centreville scored one in the first and five, two in the third and four in the sixth. NCA scored one in the third and sixth and two in the fourth.
The Lady Generals had seven hits in the contest as Belle Hollingsworth was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Kelli Hollingsworth was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Kaleigh Cosgrove was 2-for-3 with a run scored while Gracie Humphreys walked three times and scored twice. Abbie McGee had NCA’s other hit.
Jordan Russell got the start and pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up three unearned runs on three hits and two walks. Lilly Hollingsworth pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs with only one earned run on five hits and one walk.
Canton 5, NCA 3
Canton used a three-run third inning to hand NCA its third loss of the day on Saturday.
After each team scored a run in the first inning, NCA scored one in the top of the third. Canton answered with three in the bottom of the third to lead 4-2. Each team scored in the fourth for the final margin.
Each team had seven hits as Kaleigh Cosgrove was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Abbie McGee was 2-for-3 while Belle Hollingsworth had two stolen bases. Cayden Alexander walked twice and scored once.
Belle Hollingsworth and Ashlyn Mathis had NCA’s other hits.
Kelli Hollingsworth pitched all five innings and gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks.
