Newton suffered a rare sweep on the basketball courts last week as both teams lost to Choctaw Central at East Central.
The Lady Tigers suffered their first loss as they fell 49-30 to Choctaw while the Tigers dropped a 48-42 decision.
The Tigers rebounded on Saturday and beat Seminary 49-33 on Saturday.
Newton was scheduled to return to action on Friday, Dec. 28 as the Lady Tigers were schedule to play Northeast Jones at the Bay Springs Tournament. The Tigers were scheduled to play Heidelberg. The Newton boys were scheduled to take on Collins on Saturday. Because of an early press deadline, those games were not available for this week’s edition.
Choctaw Central girls 49, Newton 30
The Lady Tigers suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to Choctaw Central at East Central.
Newton led 8-5 at the end of the first period but trailed 21-17 at the half. Choctaw pulled away in the second half as they outscored Newton 12-5 in the third to take a 33-22 lead into the fourth. Choctaw then outscored Newton 16-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Nia McCalphia and Myja McNichols each scored 11 points apiece for the Lady Tigers.
Choctaw Central boys 48, Newton 42
Choctaw overcame a first-half deficit to take a six-point win over the Tigers at East Central on Friday.
Choctaw led 11-6 at the end of the first before Newton used a 17-8 advantage in the second to lead 23-19 at the half. The Warriors then outscored the Tigers 21-12 in the third to lead 40-35 at the end of the third.
Jamarian Pace led Newton with 13 points while Dazmeon Page had 12 points. Jay Roberts added eight points.
Newton boys 49, Seminary 33
The Tigers used a balanced scoring attack to take a 16-point win over Seminary on Saturday at East Central.
Seminary led 10-7 at the end of the first before Newton outscored the Bulldogs 16-7 in the second to lead 23-17 at the half. The Tigers pulled away in the third, outscoring the Bulldogs 15-5 to take a 38-22 lead into the fourth, where each team scored 11 points.
Deshaun Watts led Newton with 10 points while Yorel Phillips had nine points. Dazmeon Page and Jay Roberts each had seven points apiece.
