The Lake Lady Hornets opened the softball season by splitting a pair of games.
Lake, the defending North 2A champion, lost to 6A Madison Central on Friday and then pounded Sebastopol 16-2 in the nightcap.
Lake will return to action on Thursday as they travel to defending 5A champion Neshoba Central on Thursday. On Saturday, Lake is schedule to play Sumrall at 10 a.m. and Forrest County AHS at 11:30 a.m. at the Magee Sportsplex.
Lake 16, Sebastopol 2
The Lady Hornets scored early and often as they hammered the Lady Bobcas in four innings on Friday.
Lake scored five in the first, six in the third and five in the fourth.
Lake had 14 hits in the contest as Taylor Duncan had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run, double, three runs scored and five RBIs. Laurel Breland got off to a good start, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Landry LeBlanc was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs while Abby Pinter was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Alana Edmonds was 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored while Reagan Clark was 2-for-2 with two walks. Kate Gladney had two walks and scored three runs.
Gladney got the start on the mound and picked up the win, pitching three innings and giving up one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four. Taylor Duncan pitched the final inning and gave up one run on one hit while striking out two and walking one.
Madison Central 7, Lake 2
The Lady Jaguars jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held that advantage to take a season-opening win.
After going up 5-0, Class 6A Madison Central scored two runs in the fourth. Lake scored its two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Lake had scattered out seven hits as Kate Gladney and Laurel Breland each had RBI singles. Landry LeBlanc was 2-for-3 in the contest while Taylor Duncan, Reagan Clark and Abby Pinter each had singles.
Taylor Duncan got the start on the mound and pitched four innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking three. Gladney pitched the final three innings and gave up just two hits while striking out six.
