Newton Count rolled through a pair of slow-pitch contests this week, beating Quitman 18-2 in a division game and beating in-county rival Union 11-7 on Monday.
The Lady Cougars, 10-2 on the year, returned to action this week as they hosted Forest in a division contest and will travel to Northeast Lauderdale on Thursday. On Saturday, the Lady Cougars will play Wayne County at 2 p.m. and Enterprise at 4 p.m. in the Enterprise Tournament.
County 11, Union 7
The Lady Cougars scored six runs in the first inning and kept their distance from the Lady Yellowjackets on Monday.
After Newton County scored six in the first, Union answered with three runs in the first inning. Newton County added one in the second and two in the fifth to go up 9-3. Union responded with two in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-4. County added single runs in the sixth and seventh as Union scored two more in the bottom of the seventh.
Newton County had 15 hits in the contest as Brittany Thomas was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Shelby Anderson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Jada McDougle was 2-for-4. Katelyn Gipson and Lorren Ivey each had two hits while Landree Amis and Karlye Tolbird each drove in two runs. Lizzy Hollingsworth hit her first home run of the year, scored twice and drove in three runs.
Union’s Makenzie Dolan was 3-for-4 with three home runs and five RBIs. Macy Lott was 3-for-4 while Parker Breland and Tysia Jackson each had two hits apiece as Union banged out 13 hits.
County 18, Quitman 2
Jada McDougle was 3-for-3 and scored three runs with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Katelyn Gipson hit a home run and scored three times while Brittany Thomas had a home run, scored twice and drove in three runs. Lorren Ivey had a double, scored twice and drove in two runs. Karlye Tolbird drove in two runs while Lanie Phillips and Landree Amis each scored twice.
Gipson pitched three innings and gave up just four hits and no earned runs with no walks.
