Newton County’s hard-luck season continues as they lost three out of four contests this past week.
On Tuesday, the Cougars lost a 3-1 decision to Northeast Jones and then dropped a 12-0 decision to the Tigers on Friday night. On Saturday, the Cougars scratched out a win as they beat East Webster 20-17 and then fell 7-6 to Corinth.
Newton County will try to pick up its first wins in division play this week as they host Quitman on Tuesday at 7 p.m. They will travel to Quitman on Thursday and then to Enterprise on Friday.
NE Jones 3, Newton County 1
Northeast scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a series-opening win over the Cougars on Tuesday.
County scored its only run in the third inning as Tucker Fitch reached on a single. He came home on an RBI single by Gavin Bailey.
County only had four hits in the contest as Rod Evans and Hayden West had County’s other hits.
Hayden West was strong on the mound as he pitched a complete game, giving up three unearned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six.
NE Jones 12, Newton County 0
The Tigers scored 11 runs in the first inning and cruised to the five-inning, run-rule victory on Friday.
Newton County had just four hits in the contest as Rod Evans was 2-for-2 with a double while David Burton and Cole Shimfessel each had singles.
Harber Reese was tagged with the loss, giving up all 12 runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out three.
Newton County 20, East Webster 17
The Cougars took their offensive frustrations out on East Webster on Saturday as they banged out 17 hits in a three-run win over the Wolverines.
Newton County led 7-0 going into the bottom of the third where East responded with nine runs. Newton County then scored five in the fourth and three in the fifth and led 15-9. East then scored three in the bottom of the fifth and sixth as County led 16-15 going into the seventh. In the final frame, Newton County outscored East 4-2 to take the win.
Newton County had a season-high 17 hits in the contest, led by Gavin Bailey who was 4-for-5 with a home run and four runs scored. Rod Evans was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored and four RBIs. Hayden West was 3-for-5 with a double, home run, three runs scored and three RBIs. Cole Shimfessel was 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Garrett Mills walked twice and drove in two runs. Eli Harrison returned to the lineup and had a home run and drove in three runs.
Hayze West got the start and pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up nine runs on seven hit and three walks. Justin Davis pitched two innings and gave up three runs on two hits. Jesse Phillips pitched one inning and gave up three runs on two hits and a walk with Sam Shaw pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits.
Corinth 7, Newton County 6
Corinth scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh as they took a come-from-behind win over Newton County on Saturday at East Webster.
County scored one in the top of the first before Corinth scored four in the bottom of the third. County scored one in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Corinth scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to take the win.
Newton County had just four hits in the contest as Rod Evans had a single and scored a run. David Burton had a single and scored a run while Gavin Bailey had an RBI single. Kamron Shellwood had a single while Garrett Mills and Eli Harrison each scored a run.
Gavin Bailey pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs on five hits and five walks while striking out three. Sam Shaw pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up a hit.
