Rose, Alderman named to Class AA All-MAIS team
The Newton County Academy duo of Braxton Rose and Kemp Alderman were recently named to the 2017 Class AA All-MAIS team.
Rose was selected as a pitcher while Alderman was selected as a catcher.
Rose was the Generals’ ace on the mound this year, going 7-2 with a 1.52 ERA. In 64.2 innings pitched, Rose struck out 102 batters and walked just 24. At the plate, Rose hit .386 with 47 runs scored and 23 RBIs.
Alderman was the only freshman to make the team after a monster year at the plate. Alderman hit .525 and with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs. He also walked 32 times. Alderman also saw some time on the mound, going 2-2 in 16.1 innings pitched while striking out 27.
The Generals were 20-13 this past season, losing in the second round of the Class AA playoffs to rival Wayne Academy, falling 11-10 and 4-3.
Ogletree finishes 10th in Players Amateur
Union’s Andy Ogletree continued his solid summer on the links as he finished tied for 10th in the 2017 Players Amateur played at Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton, S.C.
Ogletree finished the tournament with a four-day score of 277 after holding the lead after the first round with a 67. Ogletree followed that with a 70 and then a 72 on Saturday. He rebounded with a 3-under-par 67 on Sunday to finish tied for 10th.
University of North Florida golfer Philip Knowles won the tournament on the second hole in a sudden-death playoff with a score of 13-under par.
Former tournament champions include PGA standouts Ben Curtis, Bill Haas, Camilo Villegas and Rickie Fowler.
