Volunteers and donations sought to clean parks and community
The Union Chamber of Commerce is seeking help by way of volunteers and donations to clean up the parks and community spaces in town.
The effort, aptly named “Sweepin’ Through Union’, is scheduled for July 18 and 19. In a partnership with “The Great American Cleanup” campaign by nonprofit Keep America Beautiful, who donated garbage bags for the Union cleanup effort, the chamber is spearheading the cleanup to benefit the entire community. A big emphasis of the weekend cleanup will be on the city park.
“We, as a board, felt like a community cleanup of the park would be something that everybody in the city could benefit from. Everybody uses it, including the schools, the daycare, the community, the churches,” said Chamber board member Tammara Rigby. “So, we’re focusing on the park to jumpstart our whole cleanup of our area.”
In addition to the park cleanup, Rigby said there was also going to be an effort to update the disc golf course, as well.
Schedule
Daly cleanup efforts are scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at the park pavilion or parking lot at the check-in tent.
One week prior to the cleanup effort, the chamber is looking for around 8 volunteers to help spray weeded areas and ants on July 11-12.
The focus for July 18 will be Trash and Debris Removal; Vegetation and Tree Work; Repairs and Border Replacement; Sidewalks; and the Cleaning of Signs.
The efforts on July 19 will be focused on Pressure Washing; Mulching and Grounds; Final Trash Haul; Restroom and Concession Stand Touch-Up; and Paint and Border Touch-Up.
Supplies needed for the cleanup effort at the park include stump killer spray, paint (outdoor-safe); mulch (pre-delivered), topsoil (pre-delivered), sand (pre-delivered), pine straw (pre-delivered), replacement wood for borders, water coolers and snacks for volunteers, and much more.
Materials needed for the disc golf repair include a quantity of 40 2/4/8 treated lumber and 196 bags of #80 Quick Crete.
Those interested in signing up to volunteer or donate supplies can do so by visiting the Union Chamber of Commerce Facebook page and following the links. Money donations are accepted, as well.
According to Rigby, they’re excited to have large groups signed up from churches and organizations to help with the cleanup and are excited to seem more from the community come out and cleanup the community.
“Some people may think they’re not qualified or don’t have experience, but everybody can pick up sticks, clean tables or other park equipment. There’s a job for everybody,” Rigby said. “It’s going to be a weekend of showing support for our community, because we love our community and we want to clean it up.”
