Someone quipped that Nancy Kidd-Smith must have begun working in the Tax Assessor’s office when she was about ten years old, but the truth is that she became the first African American female employed in a county-wide office in Newton County in 1976 after she graduated from East Central Community College and accepted a position in that office.
