The Newton County tennis team won just one of three matches last week against some strong competition.
Newton County took a big 6-1 win over West Lauderdale on Tuesday before falling 4-3 to Madison Central and 5-2 to Clinton.
Newton County (5-3) has a full week ahead of them. They were scheduled to play at Lamar on Monday and host Mendenhall in a division match on Tuesday. They will play at Lafayette County on Friday and the play two matches in Oxford on Saturday, taking on both Hernando and Oxford.
Newton County 6, West Lauderdale 1
The Cougars took a big non-division win over the Knights last week in a battle of 4A contenders.
In singles, Tate Baucum won 6-1, 6-0 on the boy’s side while Josie Tullos won 6-2, 6-2 on the girl’s side.
In boys’ doubles, Cade Cooley and Braiden Estes won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot while Keaton Gray and Caden Chaney won 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot.
On the girls’ side, Laynee Spears and Aleah McMullan won 6-2 6-5 at the No. 1 spot while Ellie Russell and Reese Thoms lost 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Cole Tadlock and Samantha Boykin won 6-1, 6-4.
Madison Central 4, Newton County 3
The Cougars fell to Madison Central in a tight match on Friday.
County won both singles spots as Tate Baucum won 6-0, 6-4 while Josie Tullos won 6-4, 6-2 on the girl’s side.
In boys’ doubles, Madison took both points as Cade Cooley and Keaton Gray lost 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Braiden Estes and Caden Chaney lost 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.

Clinton 5, Newton County 2
The Cougars fell to Class 6A Clinton in their second match of the day on Friday.
In singles, County lost both spots as Tate Baucum lost 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 on the boy’s side and Emma Beckwith lost 6-0, 6-0 on the girl’s side.
In boys’ doubles, Clinton took both matches as Cade Cooley and Braiden Estes fell 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Keaton Gray and Caden Chaney lost 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
