The Newton County Academy girls tennis team came away with two championships last week at the Class 3A South State tournament.
The NCA girls finished with five points, narrowly beating out Laurel Christian and St. Augustine. NCA’s Madeline Smith brought home the South State title at No. 2 girls doubles while Piper Collins and Jamie Stamper won at No. 2 girls doubles.
In No. 1 boys doubles, Taylor Burt and Jackson Bunyard lost in the first round, falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to St. Augustine. In No. 2 boys doubles, Eli Herrington and Noah Agent lost 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 in three sets.
In No. 1 boys singles, Cash Weems lost 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. In No. 2 boys singles, Andrew Boothe lost 6-4, 7-6 in the first round to St. Augustine.
In No. 2 girls singles, Madeline Smith won 6-0, 6-0 against Franklin in the first round and then beat St. Augustine 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.
In No. 1 girls doubles, Ayden McDill and Landry Parks beat St. Augustine 7-5, 6-0 in first-round action. McDill and Parks then lost 6-1, 7-5 to Laurel Christian in the finals. In No. 2 girls doubles, Piper Collins and Jamie Stamper beat Franklin 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and then beat Laurel Christian 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.
In mixed doubles, Celi Weems and Garrett Estes lost 6-1, 6-0 win the first round to Franklin Academy.
