It was another good week for the Newton County tennis team.
The Cougars wrapped up another division championship this past week with a 6-1 over rival West Lauderdale.
Newton County will advance six out of the seven spots to the Class 4A state tournament, which will be held on April 27 and 28th in Oxford.
Meanwhile, the team finishes the regular season with an 11-9 record and will begin the Class 4A playoffs as they host first round match against South Pontotoc on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Newton County 6, West Lauderdale 1
The Newton County tennis team wrapped up the Division 4-4A team championship this past week with a dominating win over rival West Lauderdale
The only loss came in girls singles as Brenah Flint lost 6-2, 7-5 while Cade Cooley won 6-3, 6-4 at boys singles.
In boys doubles, Parker Chaney and Cole Tadlock won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Lee Hill and Donald Blake won by default at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Emily Stewart and Josie Tullos won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Ava Espey and Marilyn Tullos won 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Tate and Maggie Bounds won 6-2, 6-1.
Division 4-4A Tournament
Newton County won won all five spots in the Division 4-4A Tournament this past week at Northeast Park in Meridian.
In boys singles, Cade Cooley beat Leake Central 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals and then beat West Lauderdale 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.
In girls singles, Brenah Flint started slow in her first set and beat Kosciusko 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals and then beat West Lauderdale 6-4, 7-6(5) in the finals.
In boys doubles, Parker Chaney and Tate Baucum had to win three matches to the claim the district title. They beat Kosciusko 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and then beat West Lauderdale 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Also in boys doubles, Donald Blake and Cole Tadlock, Newton County No. 2 team beat West Lauderdale’s No. 1 team 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, they beat Kosciusko’s No. 1 team 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the finals.
In girls doubles, Newton County’s No. 1 team, Emily Stewart and Josie Tullos beat Northeast Lauderdale 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Stewart and Tullos beat West Lauderdale 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the finals. Stewart and Tullos cruised in the finals, beating West Lauderdale 6-0, 6-0.
Also in girls doubles, Newton County’s No. 2 team, Ava Espey and Marilyn Tullos beat Northeast Lauderdale’s No. 1 team 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals but then lost 4=6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals.
