It was another productive week for area tennis teams.
Newton County won all four of its matches and clinched the 5-4A district championship while Newton County Academy won both of its matches. Union won two out of three matches and dropped its first match of the season to 3A power St. Andrew’s.

Newton County Tennis
The Newton County tennis team had four matches this past week, winning all four matches and securing the division 5-4A team championship.
On Tuesday, Newton County beat West Lauderdale 5-2. In singles, Hayes Holliman won 6-0, 6-1 on the boys side while Alissa Luke lost 6-1, 6-2 on the boys side. In boys doubles, Carson Davis and Langston Coleman won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Caden Chaney and Drew Walker won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, Abby Williams and Erin Tullos lost 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Katie Lynne McDonald and Reese Thoms won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Fisher Edwards and Ellie Russell won 6-0, 6-4.
On Thursday, County beat West Jones 4-3 in a tight match. In singles, West Jones took both matches as Fisher Edwards lost 6-3, 7-5 on the boys side and Luke lost 6-2, 6-4 on the girls side. In boys doubles, Walker and Holliman won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Davis and Coleman won 6-1,6-2 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, McDonald and Thomas won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Russell and Tullos won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Chaney and Williams lost 6-1, 7-5.
On Saturday, the Cougars won two matches at the Northwest Rankin Tournament at Parham Bridges. In the first match, County beat Saltillo 5-2. In singles, Edwards lost 6-0, 6-0 on the boys side while Luke won 6-0, 6-0 on the girls side. In boys doubles, Walker and Holliman won 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 at the No. 1 spot while Davis and Coleman won 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, McDonald and Thoms won 6-0, 6-1 while Russell and Tullos won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Chaney and Williams lost 6-2, 7-5.
In the second match of the day, County beat Oxford 4-3. In singles, Edwards lost 6-1, 6-1 on the boys side while Luke won 0-6, 6-0, 4-2 after her opponent withdrew. In boys doubles, Walker and Holliman won 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Davis and Coleman lost 7-6 (3), 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, McDonald and Thoms won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Russell and Tullos won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Chaney and Williams lost 8-6 in a pro set.
Newton County improved to 14-4 on the season and will host Pearl on Monday and Clinton on Tuesday to finish up the regular season. They will then play in the Division 5-4A Tournament on Wednesday at Northeast Park.
NCA Tennis
On Monday, NCA beat Discovery Christian 7-2 in a district match. In girls singles, Madilyn Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Jamie Stamper won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, Karlie Stamper and Cloe Weems won 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot while Lanee Parks and Brooklyn Vaughn won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Cami Weems and Andrew Boothe won 6-2, 6-2. In boys singles, Isaac Mayo lost 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Trent Wright lost 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In boys doubles, Taylor Burt and Eli Herrington won 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Garrett Estes and Cash Weems won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
On Friday, NCA took a 7-2 win over Canton. In girls singles, Madilyn Smith won 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Jamie Stamper won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. The Union tennis team played three matches last week, winning two out of three and suffering its first loss of the season.
On Tuesday, Union beat Kosciusko 5-2. In singles, Ashton Wilcher lost 6-0, 6-0 on the boys side while Hannah Pullin lost 6-1, 6-1 on the girls side. In boys doubles, Cooper Capps and Jude Feasel won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Hayden Ferguson and Levi Ferguson won 6-3, 7-6 (3) at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, Julia Harrison and Denver McCoy won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Annley Howell and Ava Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Ethan Brasher and Rylee Pullin won 6-0, 6-0.
On Thursday, Union suffered its first loss of the season, falling 6-1 to St. Andrew’s. In singles, Wilcher lost 6-1, 6-0 on the boys side while Hannah Pullin lost 6-0, 6-0 on the girls side. In boys doubles, Capps and Feasel lost 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot while Ferguson and Ferguson lost 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, Harrison and McCoy lost 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot while Howell and Smith lost 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 at the No. 2 spot.
