The Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR) is warning residents about ongoing phishing scams targeting taxpayers across the state. The department has received multiple reports of fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the DOR or the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The messages often state that a tax refund has been approved or reference unpaid traffic violations, toll charges, or fines. Recipients are then prompted to click a link or provide personal or banking information.
Officials emphasize that these messages are not legitimate and that the Department of Revenue will never request payment or personal financial details via text message.
“These scams are designed to trick taxpayers into giving away sensitive information such as bank account or credit card numbers,” the DOR said in a statement.
The department advises anyone who receives a suspicious text to take the following steps:
Do not click on any links.
Do not respond to the message.
Delete the text immediately.
Residents are encouraged to contact the Mississippi Department of Revenue directly if they have questions about the authenticity of any communication.
