The Newton Tigers flexed their muscles this past week with a pair of double-digit wins in the Class 2A state tournament.
The Tigers opened the week with a 63-22 blowout win over Amite County and then beat Pelahatchie 61-43 on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Newton girls lost in the opening round, falling 68-54 to Bogue Chitto to end their season.
Third-round playoff games will be played at Clinton High School as the Tigers take on East Marion at 7:30 p.m. The winner of Friday’s game advance to the Class 2A semifinals at the Mississippi Coliseum next week.
Newton boys 61, Pelahatchie 43
The Tigers dominated the first three periods and used a strong defensive effort to take an 18-point win over the Chieftains in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs on Saturday.
Newton outscored Pelahatchie 16-9 in the first and 8-5 in the second to lead 24-14 at the half. Newton then outscored Pelahatchie 24-12 in the third to extend the lead to 48-26 going to the fourth. The Chieftains took the fourth period 17-13 for the final margin.
Tyreke Snow led Newton with 22 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists while Tavion White had 16 points. DeTraun Brown had nine points and five assists while Craigory Craft had six points and five rebounds. Emmanuel Robinson added six points, five rebounds and three steals. Corey Taylor and Tony Jordan finished with two points each while Daylan Chapman had one point.
The Tigers forced 29 turnovers and had 17 steals for the game.
Newton boys 63, Amite County 22
The Tigers dominated the second half and run away with a 41-point win over the Trojans on Tuesday in the opening round of the Class 2A tournament.
Newton outscored Amite 14-3 in the first period and 18-11 in the second period to lead 32-14 at the half. Newton continued to pull away and outscored Amite 13-4 in the third and 18-4 in the fourth.
Tyreke Snow led Newton with 13 points while Emmanuel Robinson had 10 points. Craigory Craft had eight points while Antoine Griffin added seven points. They were followed by Tony Jordan with four and Sedrick Harris, Corey Taylor and Briceton Johnson with two points each.
Bogue Chitto girls 68, Newton 54
The Lady Tigers took an early exit from the Class 2A Tournament as they dropped a 14-point decision to the Lady Bobcats on Monday.
Bogue Chitto built an early lead and outscored Newton 15-4 in the first period and 21-15 in the second to lead 36-19 at the half. Newton fought back in the third and outscored Bogue Chitto 21-16 in the third to cut the lead to 52-40. But the Lady Bobcats took the fourth period 16-14 for the final margin.
Jamie Jones led Newton with 21 points while Erin Ware had 16 points and Somer Jordan had seven points.
