Mayor Brad Capps and ward 5 Alderman Ricky Sistrunk sat in on their last alderman board meeting last week during the Tuesday, June 3rd Union Board of Alderman meeting. Both Capps and Sistrunk will end their term on June 30, before the next alderman meeting, so they took some time to express how glad they were that they had been able to serve in their respective positions.
“I’ve enjoyed working with all of y’all,” Sistrunk told the board fondly.
Capps likewise said, “I want to thank y’all for allowing me to be the mayor and allowing me to have a part in what you do here in town.”
Both Capps and Sistrunk received thanks and congratulations on a job well done from their fellow board members. Mayor-elect Robert Blount thanked both men for the outstanding work they did for the Town of Union.
“Brad, I want to thank you and Ricky,” said Blount. “Ricky, you took the ball on the summer league program when nobody else had it. You saved the city a lot of money. You did an outstanding job. We really appreciate all you did. You put your heart in it for four years and it didn’t go unnoticed.”
Blount echoed the sentiment towards the outgoing mayor. “Brad, the same to you. You made a good guide that I’ve got to follow in the footsteps of and I appreciate what you did. You had your heart in this town. I’ll do my best to keep it going here. Thank you so much for what you did”
Other things brought up at the brief board meeting included the notice that the air conditioning at the fire department had gone out. Mayor Capps suggested that the fire department’s insurance be contacted. The board agreed and decided to let the insurance company look at it first and so the issue was tabled.
In a discussion of the topic of local street repairs, ward 1 Alderman Paul Lowery questioned why an advertisement for street bids was approved to run in the Newton County Appeal when the board did not vote to approve such an ad. Mayor Capps said he understood that there had been no authorization, but that it was over and done at that point and thus the board should focus instead on what they could do at the present time about the issue.
Capps then suggested that the board make a list of potential streets in their wards that needed repairs and that the board then go and look at which ones needed repairs the most. “We’ll start with street one and we'll go to street ten until we’re out of money,” said Capps.
The Union Board of Alderman is scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, July 1st.
