A routine traffic stop in Union on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, led to the discovery of illegal drugs, a firearm, and drug paraphernalia, according to the Union Police Department.
Officer Joshua Grimes initiated the stop on a blue Nissan Altima on Gum Street. During the encounter, Officer Grimes reportedly detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. This prompted him to contact K-9 Officer Steve Robinson and request the assistance of K-9 Sheba.
Upon arrival, K-9 Sheba conducted a search and made a positive alert on the vehicle, indicating the presence of illegal substances. Officers conducted a subsequent search of the car and recovered 3.3 grams of methamphetamine, 6.3 grams of marijuana, a handgun, a meth pipe, and a set of scales containing drug residue.
The driver of the Altima was arrested and booked into the Newton County Jail on multiple charges related to drug possession and firearm violations.
In a statement, the Union Police Department emphasized its commitment to public safety. “It is with great pleasure that the Union Police Department is working to keep the City of Union a safe place to live,” the department said.
