If you live in Newton County and your property is in need of trees, the Newton County Soil and Water Conservation District will be giving out seven different species of trees on February 9.
According to District Clerk Emilie Smith, this will be the first time that the district has held such an event. “In the past, we’ve had tree sales,” said Smith. “But looking back at our records, we’ve never conducted a tree giveaway.”
District Technician Robin McDonald, who spearheaded the efforts to host the event, said that this is something they wanted to do for the county. “This is really just a way to give back to the community,” McDonald said. “To say thanks to our members and the residents of Newton County.”
The seven species to be handed out will be Bald Cypress, Persimmon, Easter Redbud, Red Maple, White Flowering Dogwood, Nuttall, and Sawtooth Oak. There will be a limit of 3 of each species per landowner.
The giveaway begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, and will take place in front of the USDA Building at 76 Little Rock Decatur Road in Decatur. If you need more information, call 601-635-237 ext. 3 or email robin.mcdonald@usda.gov or emilie.smith@usda.gov.
