The Union Yellowjackets took a big step towards winning the Division 6-2A championship with two wins last week.
The Yellowjackets beat Lake 47-31 on Tuesday and then beat Newton 70-61 on Friday night.
The Lady Yellowjackets split their two games, eating Lake 39-32 but falling to Newton 40-24.
Union is scheduled to host Scott Central on Tuesday and will travel to Lake on Friday in a pair of 6-2A contests.
Union boys 70, Newton 61
The Yellowjackets pulled away in the final period and took a nine-point win over the Tigers on Friday.
Union led 23-22 at the end of the first but Newton outscored the Yellowjackets 18-14 in the second to lead 40-37 at the half. After each team scored 15 points in the third period, Union finished strong as they outscored the Tigers 18-7 in the fourth to take the win.
J.T. Vance had a career night for the Yellowjackets with 33 points. Kenyon Clay had 15 points while Jamarcus Jones and E.J. Campbell each had 10 points apiece.
Justin Thompson led Newton with 13 points while Jaylen Barton had 11 points. Tyreke Snow had 10 points while Kezarrian Wash added eight points. Kedrick Osby and Darrius Thames each chipped in seven points apiece.
Union boys 47, Lake 31
The Yellowjackets outscored the Hornets in every period and took a 16-point win in a Division 6-2A play.
Union led 10-7 at the end of the first and outscored Lake 14-10 in the second to lead 24-17 at the half. Union continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Lake 10-7 in the third and 15-7 in the fourth.
Jamarcus Jones led Union with 12 points while J.T. Vance had 10 points. E.J. Campbell had nine points and Kenyon Clay added six points.
Danarrious Hughes led Lake with 12 points while Zywon Ledbetter added eight points.
Union girls 39, Lake 32
The Lady Yellowjackets overcome a slow start to take a hard-fought seven-point win over the Lady Hornets.
Lake led 11-6 at the end of the first period before Union outscored the Lady Hornets 16-8 in the second to lead 22-19 at the half. Lake outscored Union 12-10 in the third to pull within one at 32-31 going into the fourth. Union outscored Lake 6-1 in the fourth for the final margin.
Keirra Russell led Union with 13 points while Kaliyah Temple had seven points. Kamayra Russell and Madison Buckley each added six points apiece.
Tra’Shaylah Wilson led Lake with nine points while Danara Barton had seven points. Ameria Ervin and Laneisha Palm each had six points apiece.
Newton girls 40, Union 24
The Lady Tigers showed why they were the defending Class 2A champions as they took a 16-point win over the Lady Yellowjackets on Friday.
Each team scored 10 points in the first period before Newton outscored Union 9-2 in the second to lead 19-12 at the half. Newton continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Union 11-7 in the third and 10-5 in the fourth.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 21 points while Zia Shields had 12 points.
Keirra Russell led Union with nine points.
