Union’s Dallas Brown has a made a career out of being a utility player for the Lady Yellowjacket softball team
Now, she’ll use that versatility to play at the next level.
Brown signed to play with Mississippi Delta Community College on Wednesday in a ceremony at the school’s library.
Brown has been a three-year starter for the Lady Yellowjackets and is expected to be the starting shortstop this season.
“She plays shortstop for us, has played outfield for us and has played third for us,” Union coach Jacob Casey said. "She has pitched and has been a utility player for us since she has been here. She does a great job at shortstop. This is her sixth year to play for us. Started since her ninth-grade year.”
Casey said Brown’s versatility makes her ideal for Mississippi Delta.
“She is a great infielder and has great hands and instincts for the game,” Casey said. “She has played a lot of ball and understand the game pretty well. She’s just a great infield and a great competitor. One of the thing I have enjoyed about Dallas, it doesn’t matter if we are playing or practicing, she is going play hard and practice hard and get dirty. I really appreciate that about her.”
Brown said she had received interest from Meridian but Mississippi Delta was her only offer. She said she liked the direction the program there is headed.
“It’s the coach’s third year and he has already turned the organization around,” Brown said. “And it has gotten a lot better. By the time the 2020 and the 2021 get there, I’m pretty sure we will make the organization better.”
Brown said she wants to pursue a criminal justice degree.
“I’d like to get that criminal justice degree and go to the Air Force or Air Guard and be an officer,” Brown said. “I just want to open doors for me with the FBI, which is what I would eventually like to do. I think the military with help me do that.”
