The Union Lady Yellowjackets advanced to the second round of the Class I slow-pitch softball playoffs on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Clarkdale.
The Lady Yellowjackets won game 1 of the series 10-3 and then finished off the series with a 10-5 win over the Lady Bulldogs.
In other action last week, Union lost 10-6 to Lake on Monday and 17-3 to Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday.
“I thought we played really well on Saturday,” Union coach Jacob Casey said. “We had 32 hits in two games and we haven’t that in a while. It’s a good time to start swinging the bat well. Hopefully, we can continue that throughout the playoffs.”
In game 1 against Clarkdale, Union scored one in the first, three in the second four in the fourth and two in the fifth. Dallas Brown, Anna Grace Blount lead the way at the plate with three singles apiece. Alan Wheeler and DaShayla Jackson each had two singles apiece.
In game two against Clarkdale, the Lady Jackets scored three in the first and finished off with two in the fifth and five in the seventh to take the win. Kayleigh Vance and McKenlee McDaniel each had three singles apiece while Tiara Campbell, Alan Wheeler and D.D. Hunter each had two singles apiece. DaShayla Jackson also had a double.
In Monday’s game against Lake, the Lady Yellowjackets scored two in the top of the first before Lake scored three in the first, second and fourth inning. Union added one in the fourth and sixth and two in the seventh. Lake added a single run in the sixth. Dallas Brown, Alan Wheeler and McKenlee McDaniel each had two singles apiece in the win.
Union advances in the Class I playoffs this week and will face the winner of the Bogue Chitto and Tylertown series. Bogue Chitto won game 1 of the series 10-0 but game 2 was delayed because of weather. If Bogue Chitto wins the series, it will be played there on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. If Tylertown wins, the series would be at Union on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.
