Unemployment in Newton County made no movement in the month of November by firmly remaining at 3.2 percent according to the latest report from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
This year’s November rate comes in three-tenths of a percentage point higher than a year ago in Newton County, when it was reported at 2.9 percent.
The county’s November unemployment rate comes in as the 25th lowest in the state, sharing the ranking with four other counties: Hancock, Jackson, Leake, and Webster.
The estimated number of unemployed in Newton County for the month of November rose by 10 since last month, up to 260, while the number of employed increased by 50, up to 7,590. The county’s civilian labor force also climbed upwards by 50, coming in at 7,850.
Mississippi’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November 2024 was 3.2 percent, increasing one-tenth of a percentage point from the previous month’s rate of 3.1 percent. When compared to the November 2023 rate of 2.5 percent, the rate increased seven-tenths of a percentage point. The Nation’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November 2024 at 4.0 percent increased one-tenth of a percentage point over the month and five-tenths of a percentage point over the year.
For the month of November 2024, twenty-nine counties in Mississippi posted unemployment rates less than or equal to the state’s rate of 3.2 percent. Lafayette and Union Counties posted the lowest unemployment rate for the month of November at 2.2 percent followed by Rankin County at 2.3 percent. Jefferson County had the highest unemployment rate for November at 11.3 percent followed by Issaquena County at 7.7 percent.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November 2024 at 3.1 percent increased two-tenths of a percentage point over the month. When compared to one year ago, the rate was one-tenth of a percentage point lower than the 3.2 percent reported for November 2023. The Nation’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate at 4.2 percent increased one-tenth of a percentage point over the month and five-tenths of a percentage point from the year ago rate of 3.7 percent.
According to the seasonally adjusted results from a survey of Mississippi employers, there were 1,196,600 jobs in Mississippi in November 2024.
Seasonally adjusted data removes the effects of events that follow a more or less regular pattern each year such as the influences of weather, holidays, the opening and closing of schools, and other recurring seasonal events. These adjustments make it easier to observe the cyclical and other non-seasonal movements in a data series. Amounts are seasonally adjusted at the National and State levels only.
