As graduation approaches for UHS seniors, Rileigh and I are featuring another senior Mikalyn Gibson who is closing the chapter on her time at Union High School with big dreams and a heart full of lessons learned. After graduation, she plans to attend East Central Community College, where she will major in Early Childhood Education.
During her time at UHS, Mikalyn participated in the Education Preparation program, which became a highlight of her high school career. “Taking this class showed me so much about myself and what I’m actually capable of,” she shared. “I enjoyed every single day in that program.” When asked about her favorite high school memory, Mikalyn honestly admits she doesn’t have one—but that doesn’t mean her experience lacked impact. One of her biggest regrets is not taking things as seriously as she should have, especially when it came to who and what she surrounded herself with. Her advice to underclassmen? “BEING BY YOURSELF IS NOT A BAD THING!”
A huge influence on Mikalyn during her high school years was Coach Rob. “He taught me so much about character, and I hope one day he sees how much our talks in his office helped me,” she said. Over the years, high school taught her two powerful lessons: have discipline, and never doubt yourself. “I’ve learned I can do hard things,” she says. She’s also come to understand the value of staying out of other people’s business—“because you don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.” While she won’t miss the chaos, she will miss those fruit salads from the cafeteria. Best of luck to Mikalyn Gibson!
