Union has cut its ties to the Waste Management company for garbage collection.
After receiving three proposals to handle the city’s solid waste, the Board voted in a special called session Monday night to accept an offer from Arrow Disposal Service of Abbeville, Ala. to make the twice-a-week pickups for the next three years beginning Jan. 1, 2020.
Arrow’s price was chosen over a $14.28 proposal from Waste Management and a $15.56 quote from Waste Pro of Southaven. Waste Management's current contract is for $13.98.
��In other business during Tuesday night's brief meeting, the aldermen discussed three case of unkempt property:
• Robert Daniels, 418 S. Decatur St. Alderman Rex Germany said, “I see some improvement and he’s moving in the right direction,” The case was continued until the January, 2020 meeting.
• Sandra Martin, 105 Gum St. Alderman Stanley said, “She has done everything that we have asked of her.” The matter was dismissed.
• Michael Bematre106 Gum St. Walker said, “He’s got the place looking as good as it looked in a long time.” Continued for 30 days.
� •Accepted a bid of $11,823 from Ammon Roofing Co. of Union to replace the top on the newly renovated police station on South Bank St.
“We’re on the verge of relocating this week, weather permitting,” said Police Chief Billy Pat Walker.
��•Passed a resolution banning smoking by city employees on city property.
