Union’s Andy Ogletree just thought that he was busy at Georgia Tech, as he worked to maintain balance between golf and academics.
But then the senior golfer burst upon the golf scene when he won the U.S. Amateur championship this summer.
That win secured Ogletree a spot on the prestigious Walker Cup team that he helped lead to victory over Europe just two weeks later.
Since then, Ogletree has been busy with Georgia Tech’s fall schedule in golf and taking 16 hours as he prepares to graduate in the spring of this year.
Ogletree finally found time to make it home this past week and was honored in a pre-game ceremony at Union High School where he was an honorary captain. On Saturday, a reception was held in his honor at Northwood Country Club, where he started taking lessons at the age of 4 from then pro Jimmy Gamblin.
“It’s been crazy, a lot of golf and a lot of school,” Ogletree said. “I’m just trying to catch my breath still. When I got back from the Walker Cup, I had two weeks of school and got all of that caught up. I had a lot of school work. It’s not been a lot of down time, that’s for sure.”
Ogletree visited with several members from Northwood and played a few holes before going back to Union to spend time with family and friends.
“Northwood has been home to me since I was four,” Ogletree said. “Jimmy Gamblin is the one who taught me how to play. I was over here working with him a lot. There were some older guys who were in high school that I played with. I can think of countless days that I spent here working with my game.”
Ogletree said he will leave Union this and go to Houston, Texas, to play in the Spirit International for Team USA.
