Union’s Andy Ogletree got his first look at the PGA Tour last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
The event was Ogletree’s first-ever PGA Tour event, getting an invitation as the U.S. Amateur champion in the Tour’s return to action.
Ogletree shot 2-over par in the event and missed the cut by four strokes.
“It was just another golf tournament to me,” Ogletree said. “It wasn’t really anything crazy, it was really just another tournament. The bottom line is I didn’t play well. I hit it good enough to make the cut but I didn’t putt well. My putter kind of let me down. I will get it figured out this week and go after it this weekend.”
Ogletree shot 3-over par in the opening round after opening the tournament with a birdie. In the second round, Ogletree shot 1-under par with five birdies and four bogeys.
“It’s a really narrow golf course,” Ogletree said of Colonial in Dallas. “I think the first day, I was too aggressive off the tee and got out of position. I think I hit it a lot better on the second day. I had a little different strategy the second day and was able to make a few more birdies. The course was really tight. The rough was really tall. You had to be really precise off the tee. I just didn’t putt that well and I’ve got a few days to work on that.”
Ogletree said his opening round birdie is one that he will remember.
“I’ve been looking forward to that hole for a long time,” Ogletree said. “A lot of people have asked me if I would be nervous but I think I handled that question. It was a good feeling but I didn’t make any more birdies in that first round. It was a good way to start my PGA Tour career. I did birdie the last hole as well so it was good to leave with that.”
Despite missing the cut, Ogletree did leave with some positives.
“I’m a guy that always looks at the positive,” Ogletree said. “I felt like my game was by far good enough to make the cut if I had putted better. It was a little affirmation that this is what I want to be doing in the future. In your bad weeks, it showed me that you can piece some things together.”
Ogletree is now headed to Hilton Head, South Carolina and will play in the RBS Heritage which starts on Thursday. Pairings will be announced on Tuesday.
