Newton County honored its veterans this Veterans Day with ceremonies across local schools and the community. Ray Morgigno, an Army National Guard veteran, addressed students at Union Public School District, while Newton County School District’s event featured school resource officer and veteran Robert Johnson.
A notable highlight was the ceremony at Newton County American Legion Post 89, where the Newton County Veterans Memorial Park was officially commemorated. State Representative Randy Rushing expressed his gratitude to the community, acknowledging the contributions of over 1,200 veterans in the county. “Newton County ranks 11th in the state of Mississippi for veteran population percentage,” he noted, thanking volunteers and donors for their support in establishing the memorial.
State Senator Tyler McCaughn praised the dedication of the park, calling it "the culmination of hours of hard work and financial support from across the county.” He added, “Our citizens are committed to honoring those who have sacrificed for the freedom we hold so dear.”
