Just a few games remain before area volleyball team begin playoffs this Saturday.
Here’s a roundup of action from this past week:
Newton County
The Lady Cougars went 4-0 last week as they also prepare for the Class 4A playoffs.
County finished out division play with a 3-1 win over Northeast Lauderdale, winning 25-16, 27-25, 6-28, 25-11.
County then won all three matches at its invitational tournament on Saturday, beating Neshoba central 2-0 (25-17, 25-22), Union 2-0 (25-20, 25-19) and Pass Christian 2-0 (26-24, 25-17).
“We’ve got a few games this week that will continue to prepare us for the playoffs,” coach Matthew Beasley said. “The team has started to come together well and each girl is getting comfortable with their new roles. Every girl wants to help the team succeed no matter what their role is and that speaks volumes to the selflessness that our girls have. They’re excited to get back into the playoff grind. We can’t wait to have the playoff atmosphere at home with our fans and community.”
Newton County improves to 27-3-1 on the season and will host Enterprise on Monday and then play St. Andrew’s and Union at Union on Tuesday before hosting a playoff game on Saturday.
Union
On Tuesday, Union beat Eupora 3-0 to finish a perfect run through district play, winning 25-16, 25-9, and 25-14.
On Thursday, the Lady Yellowjackets lost 3-0 to Lamar School, falling 27-25, 25-13 and 25-21.
Union went 2-1 in the newton County Tournament as they beat Neshoba Central 2-0 (25-17, 26-25) and Pass Christian (25-14, 25-15).
They lost to Newton County 2-0.
Union moves to 26-7-1 on the season and will now finish out the regular season this week as they play at Pearl on Monday and will then host St. Andrew’s and Newton County on Tuesday. Union will host a playoff game on Saturday.
Lake
The Lady Hornets went 3-0 last week as they beat Puckett, Clarkdale and Florence.
Against Puckett on Monday, Lake won 3-0, winning 25-17, 25-21 and 25-11.
Then against Clarkdale, Lake won 3-1, winning 25-8, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-23. Lake finished out the week with a 3-1 over Florence, winning 25-17, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-22.
Lake improves to 16-7 on the season and won the division 5-2A championship.
Newton
The Lady Tigers lost two of three games last week.
Newton opened the week by beating Forest 3-0, winning 25-9, 25-8 and 25-17.
They then lost a tight contest against Scott Central, falling 3-2. Scott Central won the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-23. But Newton responded and won the next two sets, winning 25-15 and 25-16, forcing a third-set tiebreaker. But Scott Central won the third set 15-10 to take the division win.
Newton then lost in straight sets to Clarkdale, falling 25-6, 26-16 and 25-22.
Newton moves to 8-7 on the season and will play Bay Springs on Monday and Morton on Tuesday to finish out the regular season.
