The Newton County volleyball team won all five games it played last week to improve to 8-2 on the season.
“The kids have got me excited that’s for sure,” coach Matthew Beasley said. “We’ve played some really stout teams and have competed well. We are continuing to grow together as a team and that’s all that matters.”
Last Tuesday, Newton County beat Neshoba Central 3-0, winning 25-17, 25-19 and 25-22 to take the win over the Lady Rockets.
County then won all four games in the Union Tournament to take that title as well. County started out the tournament by hammering Kosciusko 25-2 and 25-8 for an easy win. They then beat East Webster 25-18 and 25-10. Game three provided another easy win as they hammered Northeast Lauderdale 25-12, 25-12 to advance to the championship match. There they beat host Union 26-24 in a tight first set and went on to take set two 25-15 to take the tournament title.
Newton County will now host Sumrall on Tuesday and Northeast Jones on Thursday in their only scheduled action this week.
Union
The Lady Yellowjackets had busy week as they played six matches last week, going 5-1 on the week.
Union posted 3-0 wins over Pearl on Tuesday and Neshoba Central on Friday. On Saturday in their own tournament, they beat Stringer, East Webster and Northeast Lauderdale 2-0 before falling to Newton County 2-0 in the finals.
The Lady Yellowjackets are scheduled to play at Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday and at West Lauderdale on Thursday.
Lake
The Lady Hornets split a pair of contests last week, dropping their first match of the season.
On Tuesday, the Lady Hornets dropped a tough five-set contest to West Lauderdale. West took the first set 25-20 while Lake bounced back to win the second set 25-16. West took control again in the third set with a 25-10 win. But Lake bounced back and took the fourth set 25-22 to set up a fifth-set tiebreaker. The Lady Knights took that deciding fifth set 15-11 to take the match.
On Thursday, Lake beat Clarkdale 3-2 to improve to 4-1 on the season. No set scores were available.
Lake will return to action this week has they host Clarkdale on Tuesday and play at Stringer on Thursday.
Sebastopol
Sebastopol fell to 2-5 on the season as they lost all three matches they played last week.
The Lady Bobcats lost 3-0 to Pisgah on Tuesday, falling 29-27 in the first set, 25-22 in the second and 25-14 in the third.
They then lost 3-0 to Enterprise on Thursday and 3-1 to Puckett on Friday.
The Lady bobcats were scheduled to play at Clarkdale on Monday, host Pelahatchie on Tuesday and play at Pisgah on Friday.
Newton
Newton opened up the season with two wins last week, beating Taylorsville and Forest.
On Monday, Newton grabbed its first win of the season, beating Taylorsville 3-0. They won 25-16, 25-10 and 21-13 to take the win.
On Thursday, they beat Forest 3-0, winning 25-17, 25-19 and 25-11.
Newton was scheduled to play at Philadelphia on Monday, host Raleigh on Tuesday and then host Puckett on Thursday.
