The Newton County volleyball team won their end of the season tournament this past weekend.
The Lady Cougars opened the week with a 3-0 loss to Madison Central. They then responded with 2-0 wins over South Jones, Northeast Jones and Lake. They finished with a pair of 2-1 wins over Union.
“I feel like we are in a good spot heading into the playoffs,” coach Matthew Beasley said. “The girls have been tested with a tough schedule this year and have responded well to adversity. You work all year to get ready for this time of the year and this team has been fun to watch all year. They play hard and are a tight-knit team. As a coach that’s all you can ask for.”
On Thursday against Madison Central, the Lady Cougars dropped a 3-0 match to the Class 7A Lady Jaguars, losing 25-11, 26-24 and 25-13. Felisia King led Cunty with 10 kills while Adilyn Vaughn had nine kills. Tatum Evans also had eight kills and 10 digs. Shae Jimmie and Vaughn also had seven digs apiece.
On Saturday, County swept South Jones 25-18 and 25-23. King had nine kills while Evans had seven and Vaughn had six. Reese Thoms and Vaughn each had four aces while Evans and Jimmie each had six digs.
Then the Lady Cougars swept Northeast Jones 2-0, winning 25-14, 25-21. Vaughn had 10 kills while King had nine. Vaughn also had five aces and nine digs. Reese Thoms had seven digs while Jimmie had six. Kolbie Wansley, Tatum Evans and Addison Posey each had five digs.
County then beat Lake 2-0, winning 25-18 and 25-18. Vaughn had nine kills while Evans had seven. Vaughn also led County with 10 digs while Evans and Addison Posey each had eight.
County then beat Union 2-1 in back-to-back games. In the first game of the tournament semifinals, County won 29-27, 22-25, 15-6. Evans and King each had 14 kills while Vaughn had 10 kills. Jimmie led County with 22 digs while Wansley had 19.
In the second match, County won 25-16, 23-25 and 15-10 in the tiebreaker set. King led County with 19 kills while Evans and Vaughn had 10 apiece. Vaughn led county with 21 digs while Jimmie had 14. Thomas had 12 digs and Wansley had 11.
Newton County improves to 30-5 on the season and will host Lake on Tuesday in the regular-season finale before staring the Class 4A playoffs on Saturday.
Sebastopol
The Lady Bobcats got a pair of wins last week, beating McAdams and Noxapater.
On Tuesday, they beat McAdams 3-0, winning 25-14, 25-12 and 25-7.
They finished the week with a 3-1 win over Noxapater.
The Lady Bobcats improve to 8-12 on the season and 4-3 in the district play. They were scheduled to host Leake County.
Union
The Lady Yellowjackets finished second in the Newton County Tournament on Saturday.
On Tuesday, they beat Quitman 3-0, winning 25-6, 25-7 and 25-5. Destiny Moulds led Union with 16 kills while Posey Edmondson had 11 kills. Julia Harrison had seven aces while Edmondson had six aces. Ava Smith had eight digs.
On Thursday, Union beat Southeast Lauderdale 3-0, winning 25-7, 25-9 and 25-5. Moulds had 13 kills while Harrison had 10. Smith had seven aces while Moulds had six. Edmondson had six digs while Abigail Cleveland had five digs.
On Saturday, Union took a 2-0 win over West Lauderdale, winning 25-17 and 26-24.
Then they beat Lake 2-1, winning 25-9, 23-25 before taking the third set 15-13.
They then lost a pair of 2-1 matches to Newton County to finish second in the tournament.
Union moves to 24-10 on the season and will play at St. Andrew’s on Tuesday and then at Northwest Rankin to finish out the regular season.
Lake
The Lady Hornets took a pair of division wins last week, beating Pelahatchie and Puckett 3-0.
On Saturday, they lost 2-1 to Union and then beat West Lauderdale 2-0. They then lost 2-0 to Newton County and beat West Lauderdale 2-1.
Lake, now 21-6 on the season, is scheduled to play at Newton County on Tuesday and host Puckett on Thursday.
