Newton’s Erin Ware and Euniya Taylor recently brought home some hardware from the Class 2A state track meet.
Ware, who will be attending Ole Miss next fall, won three gold medals and set the Class 2A record in the 100-meter hurdles while teammate Euniya Taylor won the triple jump. Because of their efforts, the Newton girls finished second overall in Class 2A
Ware was first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.51 seconds, just beating out Stella Jolly of St. Andrew’s who had a time of 15.54. Ware’s time set the Class 2A record in the 100-meter hurdles.
Ware also took the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.88 seconds, again beating out Jolly who had a time of 48.29.
In the long jump, Newton took the top two spots as Ware won the event with a jump of 16 feet, 9 inches. Taylor was second with a jump of 16 feet.
In the triple jump, Taylor brought home the gold with a jump of 34 feet, 8 inches, just beating out Ware who also jumped 34 feet, 8 inches.
The Newton girls also finished fourth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 51.93 seconds while Amite County won with a time of 50.90. They also finished with in the 4x200-meter dash with a time of 1:51.54 while Charleston finished first wit a time of 1:49.61. On the relay teams were Dayshia Irby, Euniya Taylor, Talin Robinson, and Alexander Jones.

De'Traun Brown, who signed with Hinds Community College this fall to play football and was named the school's valedictorian, capped off a brilliant career at Newton in the state meet.
In the boys 110-meter finals, Brown finished fifth overall with a time of 15.93. He also finished sixth in the 300-meter finals with a time of 43.46.
In the triple jump, Brown finished third with a jump of 43 feet, 3.5 inches.
