Still Fiddlin’ Around
Once a fellow starts fiddling around, he may never stop. Union’s Alvis Massengale, 85, has been fiddling around most of his life. He’s fiddled all the way from the Lucern community where he was born and lives, to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
For the last three years, he’s fiddled his way into championships at the Mississippi State Fair in Jackson. Each year he has won first place for his age division in the State fiddling contest.
Music came to him naturally. He doesn’t remember when he first started playing, but by the time he was 11 or so, he was hooked for life. His daddy and grand-daddy fiddled and he guesses he learned some from watching them.
