Union High School made history this week as senior Mike Wilbanks became the school’s first-ever wrestler to compete in an official wrestling meet. Representing Union at the French Camp Academy tournament, Wilbanks brought home two victories, beginning his season with an impressive 2–0 record.
Wilbanks’ first win came by a pin against Starkville’s 175-pound competitor, Dallas Gillespie, in a decisive match that showcased his strength, focus, and technical skill on the mat. His second victory came by way of forfeit from French Camp Academy, securing a perfect start to his senior season.
“This is a big moment for Union, Mississippi,” said Union High School Wrestling Coach and Mike’s father, Michael Wilbanks. “Mike is setting the standard and opening the door for future wrestlers in East Central Mississippi. His work ethic and leadership have already made an impact as he travels across the state to compete and train.”
The meet marked the first official wrestling appearance in Union High School history, a milestone for the athletic program and a proud moment for the entire Union community.
Wilbanks’ next competition will take place in Hernando, Mississippi, at the MidSouth Madness Individual Tournament on November 22.
