East Central Community College recently announced that registration for their summer 2004 Kids College is now open, giving parents an option to get their kids out of the house and have a little constructive fun.
Kids College, scheduled for July 15-19, is open to kids aged 6-14 and will give children the opportunity to explore career fields, creative fields, STEM careers, and the fundamentals of sports.
While Kid’s College has been a staple at ECCC for years now, this year it will be a little different, according to Lucas Calvert, Vice President for External Relations at the college.
“During the morning camps, we’ll have two camp options for two different age groups, and then in the afternoon we’ll have our sports camps, which will give campers an option of doing both morning and afternoon camps, or one or the other,” said Calvert. “Our goal for Kid’s College this year is to give a lot more options. For instance, with the sports camp, rather than just sign up for soccer, it will be soccer one day, the next day football. Kind of have a rotation where kids can do a little bit of everything.”
Elementary students, ages 6-10, have two camp options that they can choose from during the Morning Camps: Career Kids and Creative College.
Career Kids camp will give students an opportunity to explore experiences at various stages of their education by exploring ten various career paths through fun, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences.
Creative College will allow the students to explore the world of music, theater, and art and get in touch with their creativity with hands on experiences that will spark their creative side.
Middle school aged students, ages 11-14, also have two options that they can choose from in the Morning Camps: Career EC and Camp AMP: STEM.
Career EC will allow students to discover ten career fields using hands-on learning, on-campus classroom, simulation, lab tours, and expert sessions with faculty. They’ll explore technology, skilled trades, careers, and more.
Students that choose the Camp AMP:STEM option will explore STEM careers though hands-on experiences in advanced manufacturing, science technology, and entrepreneurship. Utilizing the Flexfactor curriculum, this camp will allow students to work as a team to conceptualize a hardware device and showcase final product concepts in a “Shark Tank”-like pitch to local industry leaders.
All morning camps will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 11:30 p.m.
The Afternoon Sports Camp, for ages 6-14, will consist of students learning the fundamentals of over six different sports, with a different sport each day. Kids will learn the rules, as well as learn to embrace the spirit of teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
The afternoon camps will run from 1-3:30 p.m.
Students who chose to attend both the morning and evening camps will be served a lunch each day.
