Cougar Archery not only won its 2A division at South State last week, Columbia Academy also scored the highest out of more than 100 teams in all divisions, topping D’Iberville and Oak Grove high schools in the top-3. The team is now 9-0.
CA archery head coach Mike Barber said the Cougars had a great day and relied on a simple approach.

First Sgt. Jamie Holmes retired following 28 years serving the country.
After 28 years of dedicated service to the nation and the state of Mississippi, 1st Sgt. Jamie Holmes has officially retired from the Mississippi National Guard, concluding a military career marked by leadership, sacrifice, and commitment to excellence.
Holmes began his military journey in 1998 when he enlisted in the Mississippi National Guard as a traditional soldier with Company C, 890th Engineer Battalion in Columbia, Mississippi. From the beginning of his career, Holmes demonstrated a strong work ethic and dedication to both mission and fellow soldiers.

The Columbia High School football team, which won the Class 4A State Championship in December at Mississippi State, was proudly recognized by the Mississippi State Legislature for its outstanding accomplishment. The Wildcats defeated Kosciusko 6-0 to win the title.

With a handful of professional scouts in attendance, Trojans senior superstar Kolby Stringer delivered a gem March 17 against a powerful PCS lineup to lead West Marion to a 1-0 victory.
Since Region 8-3A was remade prior to the school year, West Marion baseball has had its date with Presbyterian Christian circled on the schedule. The new district foes didn’t disappoint in their two-game set as Kolby Stringer dominated Game 1 for the Trojans and the Bobcats outlasted West Marion in Game 2.
With a handful of professional scouts in attendance to watch him pitch, Stringer delivered six shutout innings with 15 strikeouts while topping out at 93 miles per hour on the radar gun to lead West Marion to a crucial 1-0 victory.

In 2025, Celebrate Sela presented a $20,000 donation to Children’s Hospital of Mississippi, continuing its mission to raise CDH (congenital
diaphragmatic hernia) awareness and support families and children in need. Since the first race in 2015, Celebrate Sela has raised over $164,000 and proudly has a private NICU room named in Sela’s honor.
Community members across south Mississippi are invited to participate in the Celebrate Sela: Race to Raise CDH Awareness 5K Run/Walk and Half Mile Fun Run on April 18 at Friendship Park. The event is dedicated to raising awareness and support for families affected by congenital diaphragmatic hernia, or CDH.
Celebrate Sela honors the memory of Sela Marie Anderson, the daughter of David and Laura Anderson, and puts a spotlight on CDH, a rare birth defect that affects the development of the diaphragm while in the womb. Sela tragically died in 2014 from CDH.

West Marion sidewinder Sam “Bone” Smith carves up the Tylertown lineup with his unorthodox release, excellent pitch shape and superb command.
West Marion took care of business to open Region 8-3A competition, sweeping Tylertown 12-0 March 10 and 15-0 Friday.
In the March 10 affair in Tylertown, the Trojans set the pace early by hanging nine runs on the Chiefs in the top of the first inning. Kolby Stringer got the scoring started with an RBI single, while a pair of bases-loaded walks and two runs via passed balls made it 5-0. Caden Turnage then drove in two more runs on a double to center before Stringer blasted the very next pitch over the centerfield wall to make it 9-0.

The Marion County School District is adding driver’s ed for the 2026-2027 school year. The program addition was mandated by the Mississippi Department of Education.
The Marion County School District will be introducing driver’s ed to the curriculum beginning in the fall as students 14 years old and up eligible to participate.
In 2024, the Mississippi Legislature approved a bill that requires all school districts to offer driver’s ed to high school students beginning with next school year.
The bill also requires that all high school students throughout the state will need to complete a driver's education course to obtain their driver’s license beginning with the 2028-2029 school year.

A Foxworth man has been sentenced to serve 30 years day for day in prison for multiple sexual assault charges on a minor.
Zachary Johnson, 31, was arrested by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in September 2024 for molestation of a child for lustful purposes. The case originated from Child Protective Services following a forensic interview with the victim. The victim reported that Johnson inappropriately touched them, and the family decided to file charges against him.
