Newton County squeezed in three games at the tail end of spring break and came away with two wins.
The Cougars beat Neshoba Central 11-8 before falling to Madison Central on Friday. The Cougars finished the week out with a 5-2 win over Sebastopol on Saturday.
Newton County will now open division play with Florence this week as they travel to the Eagles on Tuesday and host on Friday. On Saturday, Newton County will play at Northeast Lauderdale.
County 11, Neshoba Central 8
The Cougars used a pair of big innings and held off a late rally to take a three-run win over the Rockets on Friday.
Neshoba scored two in the first and one in the third to lead 3-0. But Newton County scored seven runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Neshoba scored one in the sixth and finished with fourth in the seventh to take the win.
Newton County outhit Neshoba 9-6 in the contest. Tyler Cavenaugh was 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs while David Burton was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Tyson Wood was 2-for-3 and scored two runs while Braxton Thoms singled and drove in two runs. Hayze West doubled while Gage Hollingsworth walked twice and scored two runs.
Burton pitched the first three innings, giving up three runs on one hit and two walks while striking out four. Gatlin Huber finished and got the win as he pitched four innings and gave up five runs on five hits and struck out six.
Madison Central 13, County 1
The Jaguars took advantage of nine walks and had a pair of big innings to take a run-rule win over the Cougars on Friday.
Madison scored single runs in the first and third and used a five-run second and six-run fourth to take the win. County scored its only run in the fourth.
Each team had four hits but Madison drew nine walks and too advantage of three errors.
Tyson Wood singled and scored a run while Braxton Thoms had a single and an RBI. Tyler Cavenaugh and David Burton also singled for the Cougars.
The Cougars used seven pitchers in the contest as Marcus Mowdy, Hayze West, Tyler Cavenaugh, Tyson Wood, Gage Hollingsworth, Jesse Phillips and Brent Heidelberg each pitched.
County 5, Sebastopol 2
The Cougars used a pair of two-run innings and took a three-run win over the Bobcats on Saturday.
The Cougars scored two in the third and fifth and finished with one in the seventh. Sebastopol scored a single run in the fourth and fifth inning.
County outhit Sebastopol 7-6 in the contest. Tyson Wood was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs while Braxton May was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Tyler Cavenaugh homered and scored three runs. David Burton and Gage Hollingsworth also had singles for the Cougars.
Hayze West started and pitched four innings for the Cougars, giving up one run on two hits and one walk while striking out 11. Marcus Mowdy pitched the last three innings and gave up one run on four hits while striking out two.
