Newton County Academy got its baseball season kicked off this week but didn’t find much success.
The Generals opened with a 15-5 loss to East Rankin and then dropped a pair of games on Saturday, falling 6-0 to Mize and 12-2 to Puckett.
NCA (0-3) will return to action this week as they play at Hillcrest Christian on Tuesday. They will finish the week on Saturday by hosting Clinton Christian and East Rankin.
East Rankin 15, NCA 5
The Patriots scored in every inning and took a five-inning, run-rule win over the Generals in the season opener on Tuesday.
East Rankin scored two in the bottom of the first while NCA answered with four in the second and one in the third and led 5-3. But East Rankin answered with six runs in the third and one in the fourth and fifth innings.
NCA only had one hit but issued eight walks and committed seven errors in the field. Paxton Russell had NCA’s only hit with a double and drove in a run.
Logan Smith started and pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two. Steven Duke, Logan Hitt and Logan Heidelberg each came in and pitched in relief.
Mize 6, NCA 0
The Generals struggled at the plate and were shut out by the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Mize scored one in the third and fourth and finished with four in the sixth.
Logan Smith was 2-for-2 for NCA’s only two hits in the contest.
Paxton Russell pitched four innings and gave up two runs on three hits and struck out four. Leyton Porter pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on one hit while walking five. Logan Heidelberg came in and got the last two outs.
Puckett 12, NCA 2
The Generals fell behind early as the Wolves took a six-inning, run-rule win on Saturday.
Puckett scored four in the first and five in the fourth to go up 9-0. NCA added single runs in the fifth and sixth before Puckett scored three in the sixth.
NCA had six hits as Micah Garrison, Leyton Porter, Vitaly Ferguson, Paxton Russell, Logan Smith and Logan Heidelberg each had singles.
