Both Union teams were able to pull out wins against Lake this week in a key Division 6-2A matchup.
The girls game went to overtime as the Lady Yellowjackets pulled out a 32-31 win over the Lady Hornets.
The Union boys didn’t have nearly as much trouble as they took a 53-11 win over the Hornets.
Union will return to play this week with a pair of division contests as they as scheduled to travel to Scott Central on Tuesday and host Lake on Friday.
Union girls 32, Lake 31
The Lady Yellowjackets needed overtime and held off the Lady Hornets to take a tough one-point win on Tuesday night.
The game was back and forth all night as Union led 7-5 at the end of the first and 13-10 at the half. Lake battled back in the third as they outscored Union 10-7 in the third to tie the game at 20-20 at the end of the third. Each team scored seven points in the fourth period and the Lady Hornets had a chance to win in the last minute but the Lady Yellowjackets were able to force overtime. Union outscored Lake 5-4 in overtime and again held off the Lady Hornets in the final minute to take the win.
Kamyia Russell led Union with 11 points while Keirra Russell had seven points and Madison Buckley chipped in five points. Ameria Ervin and Kaliana Jones each had eight points apiece for Lake.
Union boys 53, Lake 11
The Yellowjackets used a stingy defense to take a 42-point win over the young Hornets on Tuesday.
Union outscored Lake in every period as they led 11-2 at the end of the first and 11-3 in the second for a 22-5 lead at the half. Union blew the game open in the third period, outscoring Lake 20-2 to lead 42-7 going into the fourth. Union outscored Lake 11-4 in the fourth for the final
E.J. Campbell led Union with 12 points while Dylan Harrison had 10 points. Jamarcus Jones had nine points while Bryce Young and Robert Craft each had six points apiece.
