The Newton County Academy girls advanced to the Class 3A South State Tournament last week, splitting a pair of games in the district tournament.
The Lady Generals beat Laurel Christian 39-34 on Thursday before falling 24-12 to Lamar Christian in the tournament finals.
The NCA boys lost 47-29 to Laurel Christian in a first-round game on Tuesday as they saw their season come to an end.
The NCA girls finish as the No. 2 seed and will advance to the South 3A Tournament at Porter’s Chapel in Vicksburg and will take on Franklin Academy on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the tournament semifinals and take on the winner of Porter’s Chapel and Sylva Bay on Friday at 5:15 p.m.
NCA girls 39, Laurel Christian 34
The Lady Generals built an early lead and held on to take a five-point win over the Lady Lions on Thursday in the district semifinals.
NCA led 8-6 at the end of the first and then outscored Laurel 12-4 in the second to lead 20-10 at the half. Laurel fought back in the second half and outscored NCA 10-7 in the third and 14-12 in the fourth but the Lady Generals hit 10-of-16 free throws in the fourth to hold on and take the win.
Macie Woodham led NCA with 18 points while Addison Mathis had seven points. Addie Bergeron had six points while Lillian Nutt added five points.
Lamar Christian girls 24, NCA 12
The Lady Generals weren’t able to muster much offense as they dropped a 12-point decision in the district finals on Friday to the Lady Lions.
Lamar Christian jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first period and led 14-5 at the half. NCA outscored Lamar 5-1 in the third to cut the lead to 15-10 but the Lady Lions outscored the Lady Generals 9-2 in the fourth to take the win.
Macie Woodham led NCA with five points while Adriane Luke had four points. Ayden McDill also chipped in three points.
Laurel Christian boys 47, NCA 29
The Lions dominated the first three periods as they took an 18-point win to end the Generals’ season on Tuesday.
Laurel led 12-8 at the end of the first and then outscored NCA 15-1 in the second to lead 27-9 at the half. Laurel then outscored NCA 15-4 in the third and led 42-13 going to the fourth. NCA took the fourth period 16-5 for the final margin.
