The Newton County basketball teams finished off a busy week as they each won two-of-three contests and both teams finished as the No. 2 team in the Division 5-4A regular season.
The Lady Cougars beat Mendenhall 59-32, Richland 58-35 but lost 45-32 to Quitman.
The Cougars also won two of three as they beat Mendenhall 56-25 and Richland 84-34 but lost 83-66 to Quitman.
Both teams finished as the No. 2 seed in the Division 5-4A regular season and Quitman will host the division tournament. The Newton County girls will play Northeast Jones on Thursday at 4 p.m. while the boys will play Mendenhall on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The girls’ championship game is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and boys championship game will be at 8:30 p.m.
Quitman boys 83, Newton County 66
The Panthers used a steady supply of offense and pulled away late to take a 17-point win over the Cougars and claim first in the Division 5-4A standings.
Sebastian Johnson led County with 19 points while Keaton Gray had 16 points. Jaylen Torguson had 13 points and Dasan King added nine points.
Quitman girls 45, Newton County 32
The Lady Panthers outscored the Cougars in each of the first three periods and took a 13-point win on Friday.
Kelcei Thomas led Newton County with 12 points while Felicia King had nine points and Shae Jimmie added seven points.
Newton County boys 84, Richland 34
The Cougars outscored the Rangers in every period and took an easy 50-point win.
L.J. Cole led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points while Zarius Johnson had 13 points. Sebastian Johnson and Roby Billy each had 11 points apiece while Jaylin Torguson had nine points. Dasan King and Keaton Gray each had seven points apiece.
Newton County girls 58, Richland 35
The Lady Cougars finished strong and took a 23-point win over the Lady Rangers.
Kelcei Thomas led Newton County with 26 points while Dazlie Tubby had 11 points and Zahayliah Bell added 10 points.
Newton County boys 56, Mendenhall 25
The Cougars started fast and rolled to a 31-point win over the Tigers.
Jaylen Torguson led Newton County with 11 points while Keaton Gray had nine points. Dasan King had eight points while Zarius Johnson added seven points.
Newton County girls 59, Mendenhall 32
The Lady Cougars used a dominant second period to take a 27-point win over the Lady Tigers.
Dazlie Tubby led Newton County with 23 points while Kelcei Thomas added 14 points while Felisia King added nine points.
