The Hickory Reading Club convened on Nov. 4 at the home of Jane Brand for an evening blending gratitude, history, and literature. Co-hosted by Brand, Jackie Stamm, and Pam Waters, the gathering featured a Thanksgiving-themed dinner of "turkey and all the trimmings," set against a festive backdrop of turkey-themed decorations.
The evening began with a meditation led by Joyce Johnson, drawing inspiration from Philippians. Johnson encouraged attendees to “rejoice in the Lord always” and reflect with gratitude, noting that Americans need God more than God needs them.
The program for the evening, presented by Janice Morgan, centered on the World War II-era historical fiction and romance novel Sand and Ash (2016) by Amy Harmon. Morgan's review highlighted the novel's intricate blend of real historical figures—such as members of the Gestapo, Roman police, Catholic priests, and Florentine rabbis—with compelling fictional characters. The story delves into the sacrificial struggles of Batsheva, a Jewish woman, and Angelo, a Catholic priest, as they navigate the horrors of the German occupation of Italy and the Jewish pogrom.
Discussion following the review connected the novel’s themes to Veterans Day, incorporating poignant quotes, song lyrics, and an original poem. Attendees reflected on the bravery and resilience showcased in the novel, fostering a deep appreciation for those who endured wartime struggles.
The Hickory Reading Club continues to inspire thoughtful discussion and fellowship among its members, with a commitment to exploring meaningful literature in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
