The January eleventh Hickory Reading Club meeting was hosted by Phyllis Cain, Marie Fanning, and Daphne McMillan. Three “warms” of place (Hickory Baptist Church and light floral decor), food (hearty lasagna, side dishes, and desserts), and sociable company helped ease winter’s chills.
In inspirational moments, Faye Anderson donated in memoriam copies of Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence, and Judy Leach used a segment from Devotions from the Front Porch. Devotions used the enthusiasm, diligence, self-discipline, disappointments, and productivity of growing a garden as a metaphor for the heart situations of life.
As program, Mary Ann Bond reviewed the 2008 anthology Growing Up in Mississippi, edited by Judy H. Tucker and Charline McCord. A diverse selection including athletes and actors, journalists and judges, astronauts and artists, musicians and memoirists (as well as others) acknowledges the influences of this state’s people and places on widely varied talents and temperaments known locally, nationally, and/or internationally.
