Newton County and our local area has a lot to be proud of each year when it comes to the schools and their athletic teams. There have been several impressive showings from different schools in many phases of sports throughout the area, from football to softball. But something that really opened our eyes last year was the success in volleyball that area schools are having only a mere few years after adding the fall sport to the school’s lineup of sports offerings.
In 2023, Union, Sebastopol, Lake, and Newton County found themselves in the state playoffs. And the Lady Cougars climbed to the top of the heap by claiming the 4A title. That’s a lot of success in a short amount of time of learning the sport. In our book, that’s amazing!
And last week, East Central Community College announced that they would be launching a volleyball team starting in 2025, which is a win-win for both ECCC and student athletes in the area. When it comes to recruiting, ECCC is going to have some serious talent to choose from in their district. And the talented female student athletes in the area will have more athletic opportunities in college. Great news all around!
