One person is dead and one person was seriously injured in a shooting incident late Saturday evening in Newton.
Newton Police Chief Randy Patrick said the injured person was airlifted to the hospital last night and is in “stable but critical condition.” The identities of both persons have not yet been identified.
“We do believe that the person in the hospital is a person of interest in this case,” Patrick said. “It is possible that we may have another person of interest in custody later this week.”
Patrick said the call came in at 9:34 p.m. Saturday for shots fired on Pine Street, which is located near Wade Park in Newton. Newton Police, Newton County Sheriff’s Department deputies, Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker and agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene, along with firefighters from the Newton Fire Department, other off-duty fire personnel and CareMed EMS.
When Patrick’s officers arrived on the scene, he said one person was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds along with the person of interest with serious gunshot injuries. While he cannot confirm if the incident is related to other previous shooting incidents in the city, Patrick believes those shootings could be related.
“I don’t know what it’s going to take to solve our gun problem in the city of Newton,” Patrick said. “If we don’t do anything about it, this is going to happen again in our city. We need the help of the citizens of Newton. It’s time that we come together to end this gun violence in our city. Enough is enough.”
Patrick asked anyone with knowledge of this incident to contact the Newton Police Department at 601-683-2043. If you call after hours, 911 dispatchers will connect you with an officer.
