Newton County wrapped up division play in softball and baseball last week with rival West Lauderdale.
The Lady Cougars split a pair of games with the Lady Knights while the Cougars lost both games to the Knights.
In tennis, Newton County advanced to the Class 4A semifinals with a pair of convincing wins.
The Lady Cougars, now 16-9 on the season, were scheduled to host Southeast Lauderdale on Monday before beginning the Class 4A playoffs this weekend.
The Cougars, now 12-13 on the season, will host Clinton on Tuesday before they begin the Class 4A playoffs this weekend.
Softball
The Lady Cougars won two out of three games last week as the split a division series with rival West Lauderdale
On Tuesday, West Lauderdale took a 15-2 win over the Lady Cougars in five innings. West scored four in the first, five in the second, one in the third and five in the fifth. County scored two runs in the third. The Lady Cougars had five hits as Mary Preston Williams was 2-for-3 with a double while Adilyn Vaughn doubled and had two RBIs. Lexi Addy started pitching and went two innings and gave up nine runs with just three earned on six hits and three walks. Lexi Stevens pitched the next 2 1/3 innings while Macie McClure got the last two outs.
The Lady Cougars bounced back on Thursday and took a 6-2 win over the defending Class 4A champions. County scored single runs in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings while plating two in the fifth. County had 10 hits as Hannah Chaney was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while Adilyn Vaughn was 2-for-3 with a double. Hadley Amis was 2-for-3 while Shae Jimmie singled and scored twice. Jimmie pitched all seven innings and gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out six.
On Saturday, County finished out the week with a 9-2 win over Choctaw County. County scored four runs in the third and fourth innings to take the win. The Lady Cougars had eight hits as Hannah Chaney was 2-for-5 with a double. Gracey Wood doubled and scored twice while Adilyn Vaughn also singled and scored twice. Lexi Addy also added a double for the Lady Cougars. Addy started in the circle and pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out nine. Lexi Stevens and Landry Brunson each came in and pitched 2/3 of an inning.
Baseball
The Cougars lost two out of three games last week after getting swept by West Lauderdale in division play.
On Tuesday, West Lauderdale took a 12-0, no-hit win over the Cougars. West scored five in the first, three in the second and third and one in the fourth. Ethan Burton started and pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs on five hits and three walks. Braxton Dean, Cohen Liggett, Brady Bounds and Hayden Townsend also pitched for the Cougars.
On Friday, the game was more competitive but West Lauderdale still took a 7-3 win. West scored two in the first, one in the third and fourth and pulled away with three in the sixth. County scored one in the third and two in the fifth. County had six hits in the contest, led by Camden Thoms who was 2-for-3. Landry Tolbird singled and drove in two runs while Hayden Amis had a double and walked twice. Landon Huber started and pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on six hits while Braxton Dean pitched the last 3 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on four hits while striking out five.
The Cougars bounced back on Saturday and took an 11-10 win over Lake. The scored was tied 1-1 after three innings before County scored three in the fourth, six in the fifth and one in the sixth. Lake scored one in the fourth, five in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. County had nine hits and took advantage of six Lake errors. Vance Richardson was 3-for-5 with three runs scored while Hayden Amis was 2-for-4 with a double. Brady Bounds had a double and two RBIs while Landon Huber scored three runs and Camden Mangum scored twice. Ethan Burton started on the mound and pitched four innings and gave up two runs and struck out five. Hayden Townsend, Bounds, and Richardson each finished up with an inning.
Tennis
The County tennis team rolled through three rounds of the playoffs, beating Tishomingo County 7-0, North Pontotoc 6-1 and Amory 6-1.
In the first round, County beat Tishomingo County 7-0. In singles, Braiden Estes won 6-0, 6-1 on the boys side while Alissa Luke won 6-0, 6-0 on the girls side. In boys doubles, Drew Walker and Hayes Holliman won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Seth Gipson and Caden Chaney won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In girls doubles, Reese Thoms and Katie Lynne McDonald won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Ellie Russell and Erin Tullos won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. In mixed doubles, Keaton Gray and Samantha Boykin won 6-2, 6-0.
