The Lake Hornets won three out of four games last week and improved to 22-5 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Lady Hornets lost three of four games and fell to 13-11 on the season.
The Hornets will host Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday and then open the Class 2A playoffs as they host Richton on Friday. Game 2 will be Saturday at Richton and an if-necessary game would be Monday at Lake.
The Lady Hornets are scheduled to play Heidelberg in a doubleheader.
Baseball
Lake won three out of four games last week, beating Morton 10-0 and Newton 15-0 and 20-0. They finished the week with an 11-10 loss to Newton County.
On Monday, Lake took a 10-0 win over Morton. The Hornets scored two in the first and fifth and six in the second. Lake had eight hits, led by J.D. Gibson who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Hank Geter also singled and scored two runs. Kasen Tune started and pitched five innings and gave up one hit and three walks while striking out six.
Lake played Newton twice on Friday and won the first game 15-0. Lake scored seven in the first and eight in the second. The Hornets had nine hits as Andrew Posey was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs while Wes Bell was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Trey Gray was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Aidan Dilley doubled and Gavin Boles tripled. J.D. Gibson scored three runs while Hank Geter and Wes Nester each scored twice. Wyatt Bell started on the mound and pitched one inning and struck out three while Nester pitched two innings and didn’t give up a hit and struck out two.
In the second game of the day, Lake won 20-0 as they no-hit Newton for the second straight game. Lake scored seven in the first and 13 in the second. Lake had seven hits and drew 10 walks. Aidan Dilley was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs while Gavin Boles was 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and three RBIs. Hank Geter scored three runs and had three RBIs. Trey Grey walked three times and scored two runs while Kasen Tune, Wes Nester, Andrew Posey and Wyatt Bell each scored twice. Lake had 28 stolen bases as Bell had six steals while Kayleb Williams had five stolen bases.
On Saturday, Lake lost 11-10 to Newton County. Lake scored single runs in the first, fourth and seventh while scoring five in the fifth and two in the sixth. County scored one in the first and sixth, three in the fourth and six in the fifth. Lake outhit County 11-7 but committed five errors and walked 10. Trey Gray was 2-for-2 with a double, triple, three runs scored and four RBIs. Wes Nester was 2-for-4 and scored two runs while Aiden Dilley and Andrew Posey each had two singles. Kasen Tune started and pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up four unearned runs on four hits and five walks. Wes Bell pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on three hits and two walks while Gavin Boles pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up one run. Nester came in and got the last out for Lake.
Softball

On Tuesday, Lake lost 6-5 to Clarkdale. Lake scored two in the first and three in the fourth while Clarkdale scored two in the first, one in the fourth and three in the seventh. Lake outhit Clarkdale 11-8 as Alyssa Sockey was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Amaure’i Jones was 3-for-4. Ceely Graham was 2-for-3 as well. Daelyn Earls pitched all seven innings and gave up six runs on eight hits.
Lake bounced back on Thursday and beat Scott Central 12-0. Lake scored five in the first and four in the second as they banged out 14 hits. Daelyn Earls was 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs while Amaure’i Jones was 2-for-2 and score two runs. Adyson McKnight was 2-for-3 and had four RBIs while Lydaysha Thames was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kinsley Woods doubled and scored three runs while Alyssa Sockey tripled and scored two runs. Ceely Graham pitched all four innings and didn’t give up hit but walked one and struck out six to take the win.
On Friday, Lake lost 7-2 to defending 4A champion West Lauderdale. West built a 6-0 lead before Lake scored two in the sixth. Lake had just three hits, singles by Amaure’i Jones, Lydaysha Thames and Jacey Wells. Daelyn Earls started in the circle and pitched five innings and gave up six unearned runs on four hits and four walks while Wells pitched the last inning.
Lake finished the week on Saturday with an 8-5 loss to Caledonia, who used a pair of four-run innings. Lake scored two in the fourth and seventh and one in the sixth. Lake had 10 hits but committed five errors and walked five. Adyson McKnight was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs while Kinsley Woods was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Jacey Wells started and gave up three runs without getting an out while Alaina Alford pitched all seven innings and gave up five unearned runs on three hits and four walks.
